The Women’s American Basketball Association announced it would not proceed with its 2020 Season as planned due to the national pandemic—covid19.  The WABA was about to enter its 4th season with 25 teams located within 17 states.  The WABA was due to start games in August and run through October but will now regroup to plan for Season 4 in 2021.

Owners and coaches of the league agreed there would be significant difficulties in playing games with this number of teams across the different states, which all have a varied protocols regarding sports and game venues based on the number of cases, hospitalizations and deaths that have affected this country since March.

WABA President & CEO Marsha Blount said, “It is with regret that we have chosen to forgo the 2020 WABA season.  The health and well-being of our teams and players is the basis for this decision.  Though there has been significant movement in the re-opening of the country, enough progress has not been made in the various cities where we play.  We are a community-based league, and the safety of our fans and supporters is important to us.  After an intense League Meeting (via Zoom) the decision was made to cancel the season and focus on preparation for the 2021 season.  We will be making several announcements regarding the development of new partners for the league.  We ask that you continue to stay safe and take care of one another.”
