Maryland Jewels (aka “the Jewels”) is a basketball organization that was founded in 2017 and chartered by Jewels Nation Inc. – a 501(c)(3) corporation that focuses on the support and development of female athletes in the DMV. Maryland Jewels team is an official member of the Women’s American Basketball Association (WABA) and has competed in the league since the 2018 season. Our program is dedicated to the athletic training, mentorship, and personal growth of our athletes. We bring WABA fans a highly energetic, thrilling, family fun experience every game with our speed and charisma on the court.
The Jewels also partner with various community programs for youth sports such as Hoops & High Heels Incorporated, Beyond the Basics Basketball, and Oxon Hill Boys & Girls Club to build relationships with young girls in the DC-Metropolitan area through education, service, scholarship, and athletics.
Shannon Nichele Bryant – CEO, Team Owner
Ms. Bryant is a business consultant, sports management professional, and WNBPA certified agent from Prince George’s County, Maryland. She is a proud HBCU Alumna of North Carolina A&T State University. Currently, she studies at the University of Kansas for her Master of Science in Education (MSE) in Sports Management. Her passion for sports cultivated at an early age as a multi-sport athlete and leader in primarily basketball, soccer, and track & field. As a retired athlete and owner of the Jewels, Ms. Bryant is ultimately motivated to continue advocating for women and girls in sports while providing a unique opportunity for elite athletes to compete at the next level.
Marcus McKinney – General Manager, Head Coach
Coach McKinney is a renowned educator, basketball coach, and skills trainer from Arlington, Virginia. He has an accomplished background in mental health, education, and player development. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at James Madison University, and a dual Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership and Special Education at George Mason University. He was also selected in 2019 to run the girls’ basketball program at the legendary T.C. Williams High School in Alexandria, VA. Coach McKinney’s passion for the game and unwavering philosophies on leadership will help us build a strong program that continues to uplift and effect positive change in our communities.
