Jessie Fleming Named WABA 2019 Coach Of The Year

May 18, 2020 – Fleming Named WABA Coach of the Year

The Women’s American Basketball Association has named Jessie Fleming as the league’s 2019 Coach of the Year. Fleming is the owner and head coach of the Coastal Empire Lady Monarchs.

The WABA made the announcement on a End of the Year Awards press release that was released May 14.

When asked how his feelings on winning he award, Fleming said that his players deserve the award just as much as he does because of their hard work. “Do you know how rare it is as a owner/coach to find ten women to buy into your platform and play as hard as these ladies and stay dedicated for two seasons doing what they love to do and still holding down jobs.”

During the season, Fleming guided the Lady Monarchs to the WABA South Region title as well as a berth in the league championship game. The team had playoff wins over Montgomery (84-83) and Mid-West (98-84) before falling to the DC Cyclones in the championship game (105-81).

The Lady Monarchs were short-handed in the championship game and played without their leading scorer, TaQuandra Mike who had work obligations.

Under Fleming, the Lady Monarchs ended their regular season with a 8-1 mark while finishing with a 10-2 record overall.

A former point guard at Bradwell Institute, Fleming earned a basketball scholarship to Lake City Community College and later at Columbus State University.

Fleming expects to have all ten players back for the 2020 season but if anybody wants to try out for the team, they can contact Fleming at 912-610-3092.
